TEA COZY COMPETITION 2013
The Larkin Tea Company has announced winners of the 2013 Tea Cozy Competition. So, who produced the best knitted, crocheted or felted wool tea cozy?
The winning entry, Sea Anenome, was created by Gerda Liebmann of Highlands, New Jersey.
Second place was awarded to Micki Smith-Darnauer of Hedgesville, West Virginia, for Cauliflower.
The contest began in 2009 and was intended as a one-time event, but Judy Larkin of Larkin Tea Company tells us that people kept urging her to repeat it.
The idea for starting a contest came when Judy’s sister sent her a vintage knitted tea cozy, probably made in the 1960's. The workmanship was amazing and it was apparent that a lot of time and love had gone into creating the piece. It made one wonder how many teas this humble cozy had presided over and the tales it could tell.
Although not a knitter herself, Ms. Larkin is amazed at the number of knitting groups there are where people of all ages and walks of life come together and share their knowledge of knitting and crocheting. Probably, just as important, the groups have become not just a social activity but a support group too. The contest is a way to celebrate this. It is nice to think of people savoring tea along with the chatter…to the sound of clicking knitting needles.
Ms. Larkin said, “This year's entries were all so different and showed just how creative people can be. I'm so relieved that the judging was not up to me. We invited the general public via The Tea House Times, Facebook and the Internet to send in their votes for their favorite entry. In the end, the person with the highest tally was the grand winner. A winner was also randomly selected from the voter pool.”
The winner received a selection of Larkin Tea Co. teas plus tea-related gifts such as note cards, jewelry and tea accessories. All entrants will receive a free one year online/digital subscription to The Tea House Times at http://www.theteahousetimes.com
Plans are already underway for next year's competition. Watch for details.
